Frequently Asked Questions

+ What can I expect at my first therapy visit?

You can expect for us to get to know one another and if you’re ready, we will talk about what has brought you to therapy in more detail. It’s important for us to establish a relationship, just as you would with someone you meet outside of therapy. Whether you are comfortable from the get-go or need a little time to warm up to the idea of therapy- I will meet you exactly where you are at.

+ What should I expect from therapy overall?

Whether it is your first time in therapy or this is a new go-around, you should expect: That we will develop a mutual understanding of the challenges you face, identify the goals of utmost importance to you and establish a plan (or treatment plan) to help you achieve those goals. I will teach you new skills, different ways of thinking, and strategies to become the best version of yourself. I always encourage my clients to practice skills in between sessions so that they incorporate the skills learned in session into their daily lives. Practice/homework, in varying degrees, is something you can expect!

+ So I have decided to move forward with therapy, how long will this take?

The length of time in therapy is dependent upon numerous factors. Such factors may include; individual goals, symptoms, severity of the problem, your preferred method of treatment, etc. With regard to the latter- I do offer short-term, evidence-based treatments, many of which have an average target of 12 sessions. When we meet, we will discuss the frequency and timing of therapy to best fit your needs.

+ How long is a therapy session and how often will I see you?

Therapy sessions are typically 45 minutes long and are often scheduled weekly, especially in the beginning or for the first few therapy sessions.

I find that weekly sessions at the start of treatment are especially helpful in helping us to build a therapeutic alliance and relationship. Weekly sessions can also help to keep you accountable and motivated to work towards your goals in an efficient way.

As therapy progresses, we can work together to determine if weekly sessions will continue to be useful. Some people will find that as they begin to heal and grow, fewer sessions are needed. The frequency of sessions will be adjusted in order to best meet your needs and maintain positive change.

My goal is always to get you to a path towards self suffiency, so that your need for therapy is not an ongoing, life-long commitment.

+ I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I love when potential clients ask me this question! Your active participation, consistent attendance and dedication are of the utmost importance.

+ What is a Superbill?

A Superbill is comparable to an invoice. This monthly statement is your receipt for tax or insurance purposes. Some or all your fees may be covered by your health insurance, if you have outpatient mental health coverage. However, insurance companies do not reimburse all conditions that may be the focus of psychotherapy. Many clients will not receive any reimbursement from their insurance company. I strongly encourage you to check with your insurance provider prior to receiving services.

+ How do I pay for my sessions?

You can securely pay for your sessions by providing your credit card information via the Client Portal. Cash, check, and all major credit cards are accepted.

+ Do you prescribe medication?

I do NOT prescribe medication. However, if you are in treatment with me and would like to explore psychotropic medication treatment as an intervention- I would be happy to assist you in locating a provider. You can surely be in therapy with or without having been prescribed psychotropic medication. Many clients I have seen do prefer to try therapy first or as a complement to psychotropic medication treatment.

+ How does online counseling work?

To enter a virtual session, you will receive an email that will inlude a zoom link to the secure meeting site. You will need a good internet connection, a computer with a webcam or a smartphone device, such as apple or android devices.

I use a secure, HIPAA compliant teleheath system (Zoom) to provide online accessibility to my clients.
